Is AI Art Art?

Here is the truth: AI Art IS Art.

What is Art, Anyway?

The Britannica Dictionary defines art as “something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings.”

At the core of AI Art is an idea. Before I even type a prompt, I already have a picture in my head. The challenge? Translating that mental image into words.

AI Art = Painting a picture with words.

Not every idea I have is a masterpiece—but some definitely are. And just like with traditional art, it takes time, practice, and refinement to bring a vision to life.

Is Prompting a New Artform?

At first glance, one might think the answer is no. After all, typing a few words into an AI model doesn’t sound like much of a skill.

But then I think back to my experience as a language teacher. Whenever my students had to describe a person or a situation in detail, many of them struggled. Describing a vivid scene, evoking a specific mood, or capturing an artistic style in words is far from easy. It requires precision, creativity, and linguistic finesse

Prompting requires superior language skills.

So yes, in that sense, prompting is an art form of its own—one that blends creative writing with technical understanding.

The AI Artist: A Hybrid of Writer and Techie

An AI Artist—or prompter, if you prefer—is someone with a very specific skill set:

  • Mastering AI Syntax: Understanding the structure, limitations, and capabilities of AI models like MidJourney, DALL·E, or Stable Diffusion.
  • Crafting Precise Descriptions: Painting a mental image through words to achieve a specific style, ambience, or mood.

AI Artists are a new kind of artist.

That’s why there’s a world of difference between random AI-generated images and true AI masterpieces.

Is AI Art Bad?

With the flood of AI-generated images online, it’s easy to think that AI Art is just a soulless, mass-produced trend. And to be fair, a lot of AI-generated content is mediocre at best.

Why does your AI Art look bad? Because your prompts aren’t good.

There’s a difference between typing “rabbit in space” and letting the AI do the rest, versus crafting a detailed prompt like: “A rabbit sitting on an asteroid, tilt-shift effect, purple hues, 3D rendering, V-Ray lighting.”

Great AI Art takes research and experimentation. In my case, I’ve spent 18 months refining my skill—developing an expertise in material science to replace real-world textures in my images. My AI fashion pieces, for example, explore the concept of replacing fabric with unexpected materials.

Like any other art form, AI Art requires practice, curiosity, and an evolving creative vision.

How to Get Better at Prompting

Like any skill, the key to mastering AI Art is practice. My process follows a structured approach:

  1. Start with a clear idea. What do I want to create? (Example: A rabbit on an asteroid.)
  2. Break it down into details. What does it look like? (Purple fur.) What texture does it have? (Feather-like strands.)
  3. Refine and iterate. Each generation brings new insights. Tweaking the prompt is part of the creative process.

Prompting is verbal attention to detail

If you can describe it well, you can create it.
